SA Jazz Songbook

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project! When Dr Karendra Devroop from Unisa Music Foundation phoned me earlier this year to hear if I'd be interested in editing and mastering this project to DVD for him, it took me about half a second to say yes! I had worked with Karendra before and I was thrilled to have another opportunity to do so again.

Honestly working on this was a breeze. Kudos to Unisa for giving me full access to the raw footage, all the branding artwork I could ask for and jus...

"But did you at least ride a camel?"

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Tuesday, May 1, 2018,

I have a friend who works in the film industry. I’ve always envied him because he is an incredibly talented cameraman who has worked on several high-end television and movie productions. I once asked him about the glamorous entertainment industry he worked in; about all the expensive toys and the famous people that surrounded him on a daily basis. He then knocked my feet out from under me when he paused briefly and remarked with a tired expression on his face: “You know the bigger the pro...

And this is why you should be shooting 4K now

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Saturday, November 4, 2017,

4K, or UHD is all the rage right now. So what is all the fuss about? Well, the resolution of UHD images is absolutely gorgeous! If you need convincing just walk into any electronics store and take a good look at the 4K ready monitors and the demo material Sony, Panasonic and many others are peddling now.

But other than beautifully crisp images there's a very good reason to start upgrading at least one or two of your HD cameras to UHD soon. Most of us edit 1080p HD projects and output that as w...

We used a boom mic. In a news studio

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Sunday, October 8, 2017,

One of the highlights from Insane September was to film an interview with eNuus journalist and NWU Alumni Award recipient Daniëlla van Heerden.

We really enjoyed meeting Daniëlla and she was kind enough to arrange her interview to be filmed in the same eNuus studio where she reads the Afrikaans news every night. Daniëlla is a master of her craft and a super nice person on top of that, and it was a real privilege to have filmed her.

Ferdi and I are probably also the only crew to have ever u...

New on the Optentia channel: We-DELIVER mini-series

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Sunday, October 8, 2017,

There's been plenty of new things happening at Optentia Research Focus Area recently. New on their YouTube channel is a three part mini-series for the NWU's We-DELIVER project. This series took us all the way from Vanderbijlpark to Mahikeng and the Lokaleng Community on its outskirts to film footage.

This was my first shoot with a new shoulder rig and a new set of Rokinon cinema lenses and I'm really thrilled with quality of the footage we shot. Part of the fun of this job is seeing new place...

A new look for Optentia

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Wednesday, April 5, 2017,

Part 1 of the new Optentia video series is live on NWUtv, and I'm just thrilled with how it turned out. Prof Ian Rothmann and his team is going from strength to strength and I just love being part of this! I tried to follow a different approach with this video - more footage, less graphics. And having now built up a library of footage covering most of Optentia's activities, editing this turned into an absolute joy. It's a great place to be with a client when you have an abundance of material ...

Filming aerials. The legal way.

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Thursday, March 2, 2017,

South Africa has some pretty extreme legislation regarding the use of drones, resulting in a large amount of illegally filmed stuff being out there. So when I was asked to source a commercially licenced supplier for a big corporate video project recently it took some research before I managed to find my drone guys. Currently only eleven companies are commercially licenced in South Africa, and of those only a handful focus on filming for the television and film market. It has become a very spe...

Ready. Set. Go.

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Friday, January 27, 2017,

After a very lazy December holiday season, 2017 has suddenly started off with a bang. Even though I've been doing this for a few years now, every single shoot is new and unique and every single year is different in terms of the types of projects I get to do. And if like me you constantly need new intellectual stimulation to keep going, the variety this type of work offers is fantastic.

I'm currently running Media Composer 8.7.2 and I'll be trying out a few of the new features over the next f...

Lamento - taking opera into the digital age

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Thursday, November 24, 2016,

This has certainly been a very good year for music movies! Earlier this year A Joyful Sound finally made it online. Then there was a short piece on the School of Music's Musikhane community project. I did my first project for an international client when WFIMC called from Switzerland. A few weeks ago Umculo took a Mozart opera to the Ikageng township. And now, as a finale and a follow-on to the Figaro project, the Lamento production documentary follows the cast as they bring a very unique mul...

The annual doccie: a township production of Mozart's Figaro

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Saturday, October 1, 2016,

I try to do one big project a year, usually a documentary, and this one for 2016 happened quickly and very unexpectedly when Conroy Cupido phoned me while I was on another shoot. I was also tempted to blog this story earlier in the week, but I decided to wait a few days. Make no mistake I really enjoy blogging; I find the production process and tools I use absolutely fascinating and I love writing about things I have a passion for. But something about this project just wanted me to wait un...

MCD Training Centre impresses at Sasol TechnoX 2016

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Sunday, September 18, 2016,

I LOVE being able to type up blog post headers like this one!

The MCD Training Centre display at the 2016 Sasol TechnoX show in August proved to be a real crowd-puller and according to MD Dan Sothoane the kids flocked straight to the Blu-ray video displays. That's great because it means we managed to produce a video that works. Again I didn't do this all by myself - I couldn't have pulled off the shoot without the help from my trusty assistant Ferdi, and voice talent Yolanda Maartens Brown a...

New on YouTube

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Friday, August 26, 2016,

The annual end-of-the-year rush usually starts around middle August and this year is no different. Among the projects I completed this month is this one for the marketing and communication folks at NWU Vaal. Plenty of run-and-gun work here (and a bit of a struggle to get shy people to stand still and speak to you) but I'm happy with the results.

The more of these I do, the more I realize how essential camera tools with good low light capabilities are. When producing news programming you wil...

I completed a video for a brand new client this week and I'm thrilled with the results. Even better is that they are thrilled with it also!

MCD Training is doing great work in addressing the massive skills shortage in South Africa by providing a wide range of technical training solutions to companies and individuals. Their video is on YouTube and will also be showing at their booth at the 2016 Sasol TechnoX expo from 15 August. The video was shot over two days and we had a lot of fun doing it...

July has been a busy month and one of the projects I completed was an extended version of the Musikhane community music project (originally produced for the NWUtv Community Engagement series) for the NWU's School of Music.

We filmed a lot of great footage and interviews that didn't make it into the original NWUtv version due to time constraints. So if you liked that video, you'll enjoy this version that features more interviews with students and learners.

Today sees the last video in a ten-part series on NWU community engagement go live on YouTube. This concludes a very ambitious project that started small in February with a single promo and has now evolved into a full campaign that will combine print and online media. October was multicam month

With no less than four multicam projects, October definitely qualifies for the title "multicam month". The ability to sync up three or four camera feeds and assemble a basic cut in a live switching-type fashion has always been one of my favourite features in Media Composer. It is also a MASSIVE timesaver, allowing me to do in realtime what would have taken hours to do manually. In 8.4 multicam is still going strong, even on my rapidly aging HP Elitebook.

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Friday, July 6, 2012,

Above: Background elements in this clip were given the DFT Film Stocks treatment to meet the latest NWU visual language requirements. View the full clip on YouTube

The NWU is one of my major clients and they recently changed their visual communication style to a modern contemporary "light and airy" look. Achieving what is basically a stylized "Instagram" look in future video projects through ordinary colour correction tools would take hours so it made sense to look at a serious colour grading...

Above: Podcasts. Webisodes. Whatever you want call them, they're fun, they're popular and they're spreading through social media like wildfire. Who cares about broadcast television when you have the internet...

The NWU's Centre for BMI came first with BMI | TV. Then came the NWU Faculty of Engineering with e-Info. And now there's Take Note by the NWU's School of Music. All three projects aim to inform and entertain with regular internet-based video news programmes. Although each series is uniq...

Around the world...before the Open Day!

Above: The completed interactive UI featuring a 3D rotating globe that takes the user on a trip around the world.

When you get us to do a project, you’re guaranteed of two things - the final product will be handmade from the ground up and absolutely unique.

This is especially true for an interactive project just completed for the International Office of NWU’s Vaal Triangle Campus. Every year NWU Vaal receives a large number of students from all across the world. A need developed...

A blast from the past

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Thursday, March 15, 2012,

The documentary "Finding the Fable" directed by Nicholas Ellenbogen was shown in the William Humphreys museum in Kimberley recently.

The project was initiated two years ago by the African Centre for Disaster Studies at the NWU and was funded by USAID. The film itself boasts a great musical score courtesy of acoustic rock duo Lloyd & Bruno. If you couldn't make it to Kimberley yesterday don't despair because its available on DVD and you can view it online on YouTube

Thanks to Michael Murp...

Shooting interviews with Ruda Landman

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Wednesday, February 29, 2012,

This week I had the priviledge to shoot interviews with veteran reporter and television personality Ruda Landman. The project called for a number of short interviews to be shot and made available as WMV files for review during a training session afterwards. Time allowed for post - only 60mins! I managed to get this done by shooting on P2. We swopped cards after every interview and the media went straight into Media Composer for processing on location.

It was a real treat to see a seasoned te...

I don't normally do websites but this one was an exception and it turned out pretty well. The site is for the folks at REDCO Services who wanted a new look to go with their newly designed logo and domain name. Oh yes...I designed their logo too :)

Check out their website at http://www.redcoservices.co.za

Filming the Faculty of Engineering's new home

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Saturday, November 26, 2011,

I'm proud to announce that Match Frame Media has been contracted by the Faculty of Engineering at the NWU's Potchefstroom Campus to produce a series of videos and an interactive media project aimed at the Faculty's 2012 marketing efforts. The project kicked off this week with the filming of the newly constructed faculty complex, now in its final stages of construction. I have to admit that until a few weeks ago I didn't even know about this development and believe me it is truly awe-inspiring...

In production: new corporate video shot with Canon 5D

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Thursday, October 27, 2011,

Above and below: footage from the shoot

What a hectic time of the year! I’ve been a fan of DSLR video ever since we worked on the L&B music video. When I landed a big corporate video project a few weeks ago it took me about three seconds to decide that I wanted it shot with a Canon EOS 5D. To the uninitiated the 5D is a digital still camera that has become all the rage in the digital video world where a few pros are applying them with great effect to shoot everything from high end commercial...

Take a stand! (a Miller stand preferably)

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Wednesday, September 14, 2011,

If you make a living from professional video a good quality video camera and tripod will be some of your biggest capital investments. And if either one of two is rubbish, the resulting footage will probably be of the same quality. In the modern digital age HD has become the defacto standard, with DV tape now basically relegated to little Suzy’s birthday party and maybe her wedding a few years later on if her parents decide to trim the big day’s budget.

Panasonic brought out a number of...

Interactive projects now available for Mac and Windows OS

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Saturday, September 3, 2011,

Above: my first interactive project that deploys on Mac OS X. This project will also be rolled out in the standard Windows compatible version on flash drive and MiniDVD.

I've just completed my first interactive project for a client that will deploy on the Mac OS. I've done this for years for Windows operating systems and with the addition of Mac compatibility clients will now be able to have their consumer media available for both Windows and Mac end users. This includes any integrated video a...

Make those blocks move - creating the new NWU promo

Posted by Corne Scheepers on Thursday, August 25, 2011,

I recently completed a promo clip for the friendly folks at the NWU's corporate communications department. The project brief called for an effects clip that tie closely into current corporate identity graphic design. I love FX work and this project was right up my alley even if the deadline was desperately tight - only five working days available from the first phone call to the delivery of the final video media in multiple consumer formats!

Technical projects like these seriously appeal t...
