You don't need a studio for a green screen shoot anymore.
I've now done two green shoots for a client using a new portable green screen and LED lighting and I'm thrilled with the results. The green screen kit was custom made for me by a Jhb-based supplier and consists of a cloth screen that attaches to a lightweight aluminium frame. The frame and cloth itself can be set up in a 1.5m x 2m configuration or a larger 2m x 3m configuration.
Of course green screen videography only works when your lighting is spot-on. I took delivery of a set of brand new LED lights a while ago and this was the first opportunity to really put them to work. They're great. Very lightweight (important if you work solo like me) with very low power consumption (they can even run off 12V batteries) and highly adjustable so you can set up your lighting perfectly.
This setup is perfect for me right now. Most of my productions take me out on the road and this kit is compact enough to pack into the back of the vehicle along with the laptop editor and a camera bag.
Green screen anywhere, anytime and with a highly polished professional end result that clients expect.

I took delivery of new mobile editing workstation on Friday and it's a little monster with a nuclear powerplant under the keyboard! I loved my old 17 inch HP and it turned out to be a real workhorse, taking all the use and abuse that comes with being a mobile edit suite without missing a beat. The old 8730w really worked hard - when I got back from the doccie shoot last year I had to use an air compressor to flush out all the dirt and grime from three weeks of bush editing!
I'm a firm believer...

The documentary film "Finding the Fable" is now available on YouTube. The film was written and directed by Cape Town-based director and playwright Nicholas Ellenbogen. The film project was commissioned by the NWU's African Centre for Disaster Studies and was funded by USAID. The film boasts a musical score performed by SA acoustic duo Lloyd & Bruno. Their song "Loaded Gun", the theme song of the film, is currently playing nationally on all the major radio stations. The documentary and the mus...

The Loaded Gun was officially fired last night.
Lloyd & Bruno unveiled their new music video to the fans at the Barnyard Theatre in Vereeniging. The crowd was treated to the Making of the Video clip as well as the main event of the evening, the showing of the music video for their hit song "Loaded Gun".
It was a great evening and we had a lot of fun. The band asked me to film the event and I'll be posting a short backstage clip of the show on my YouTube channel soon. Watch this space!

No matter how careful you are or how dilligently you make backups (and backups of backups) of crucial data, somewhere you or the world around you will cause things to go horribly wrong. Like I did yesterday.
I get back from the morning's shoot dead tired. Need to charge batteries for next shoot later that night. Grab breakfast with one hand and the battery charger's power chord with other hand. Look for an open power socket on the edit desk. Stop thinking and just unplug the first plug to plug...

All the work has been done and now it's time to celebrate!
It's official, Lloyd & Bruno will be launching "Loaded Gun", the theme song of the documentary "Finding the fable" on 30th April at the Barnyard Theatre in Vereeniging. Bookings are now open. Miss this and you'll miss the party of the century. And you'll also be a very dull, uninteresting person. So rather be there. It's better that way. Really.

The Lloyd & Bruno music video Loaded Gun will be showing outside the borders of SA soon. And very fittingly at the United Nations' Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction conference to be held in Geneva, Switzerland from 10 - 13 May this year.
Loaded Gun is the theme song of the documentary film project Finding the fable that was commisioned last year by the NWU's African Centre for Disaster Studies and funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The music video includes...

Stable camera support is the difference between shooting footage that you can ultimately sell to a client, or footage that looks like you gave the camera to the assistant's kid brother while you had to visit the loo between takes. Seriously, if you're not filming skateboarding or a firefight in Afghanistan, put the camera on something stable and save the editor hours of pain!
I had a nice home-made bean bag that I managed to lose on the very first day of filming on the documentary project las...

Yesterday a client brought in footage he shot with a small JVC Everio HDD camera for editing. While this compact little camcorder does rate high in the compactness category, it does present problems when you've shot footage that needs to be edited later. Reason? Well it records SD video files to the internal hard drive as .MOD files. Really JVC, what were you thinking!? While the .MOD clips can be viewed in Media Player on a Windows system, you'll have a hard time importing these files straig...
