GoPro. And an inflatable pool toy.

New from the Red Bull channel. And I have nothing else.

Incoming. Drone footage from Syria.

July 4, 2017

There's nothing glorious about the war in Syria. Or any other war for that matter. Headline news stories of displaced civilians and ISIS atrocities are downright upsetting, not to mention the growing potential for a showdown between former cold war rivals in the area. But whether you're hawk or a pacifist, there's no denying that the drone footage in this video is pretty unique and impressive. Drones have become both lethal weapons of war and indispensable tools in cinematography, and this vi...

Varizoom shoulder rig...modified

July 3, 2017

A shoulder rig has been on my shopping list for a long time. Why? Ever spent a day filming handheld footage with a full-sized camera cradled in your arms like a newborn baby? Needed painkillers that evening for the muscle cramps?

DSLRs and small camcorders have made it easier to go handheld, but smaller and lighter also means less stability and sloppier footage. And so the shoulder rig was born - those weird contraptions with a set of bicycle handlebars, metal support rods, a shoulder pad and ...

Yes I really did this...

June 3, 2017

What you're looking at is the repair I made to my old Miller DS-20 tripod. See, when the plastic release latches start cracking after six years of daily use and you're faced with the prospect of coughing up R25K for a new tripod...you just drill holes in that baby and fix it with R10 worth of screws from your local hardware store! So far it works great :)

Libec AP-5 Quick Release Adapter

June 3, 2017

If like me you shoot with more than one camera during a shoot you know what a pain it is to swop cameras on tripods and other support systems between takes - usually to move your primary camera from a tripod to a shoulder mount or slider requires filming to stop while your assistant runs back to the van to fetch the tools. Unscrewing camera plates wastes time and also wears out the mounting screws and thread holes of your equipment over time.

The obvious solution is to use the same type of ca...

New legs - Miller Solo DS-20

May 2, 2017

Above: joy arrives in a B&H box and bubble wrap!

I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to tripods, I must admit.

I worked with Sachtler legs before which was great, but sadly unobtainium in South Africa nowadays. Then there was garbage in the form of Manfrotto (sorry to hate on this popular brand, but the one I was given was crap) and then there was utter garbage in the form of a Chinese brand I cannot even recall the name of. The fluid head's plastic (!) camera plate latch broke in the middle of...

A new look for Optentia

April 5, 2017

Part 1 of the new Optentia video series is live on NWUtv, and I'm just thrilled with how it turned out. Prof Ian Rothmann and his team is going from strength to strength and I just love being part of this! I tried to follow a different approach with this video - more footage, less graphics. And having now built up a library of footage covering most of Optentia's activities, editing this turned into an absolute joy. It's a great place to be with a client when you have an abundance of material ...

The mandatory monthly GoPro jet post

April 5, 2017
Hi. My name is Corne and I'm a military aviation addict.

And I dig GoPros. I'm also a scale modeler in my free time. There I said it - I like little toy airplanes. I have a room full of them. The month of March has yet again delivered a rich bounty for aviation geeks such as myself. Here's my pick from the aviation blogs:

I just love this clip of a Spanish Harrier, flying off the aircraft carrier Juan Carlos. As the original vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) jet, this iconic British-design...

Filming aerials. The legal way.

March 2, 2017

South Africa has some pretty extreme legislation regarding the use of drones, resulting in a large amount of illegally filmed stuff being out there. So when I was asked to source a commercially licenced supplier for a big corporate video project recently it took some research before I managed to find my drone guys. Currently only eleven companies are commercially licenced in South Africa, and of those only a handful focus on filming for the television and film market. It has become a very spe...

This looks cold

March 2, 2017

If the drop zone is near a place called Deadhorse, you pretty much know not to expect much in terms of creature comforts... I picked up on this clip of paratroopers practicing arctic jumps in Alaska a while ago through the aviation blogs and it has some really cool GoPro footage of the jump itself towards the end. Just wish they killed the wind noise on the camera. But it is unique footage non the less.

Ready. Set. Go.

January 27, 2017

After a very lazy December holiday season, 2017 has suddenly started off with a bang. Even though I've been doing this for a few years now, every single shoot is new and unique and every single year is different in terms of the types of projects I get to do. And if like me you constantly need new intellectual stimulation to keep going, the variety this type of work offers is fantastic.

I'm currently running Media Composer 8.7.2 and I'll be trying out a few of the new features over the next f...
